AMD Releases Epyc 4005 Server CPUs

Today AMD introduces it’s new Epyc 4005 series CPUs, a mildly updated Epyc 4004. SemiAccurate doesn’t have much to say about the products but again, it is a PR fail.

Lets start out with the devices themselves, 6-16C consumer Ryzen CPUs with their broken ECC support fixed. Hopefully. This time. Fingers crossed. If you are thinking Stryx Halo with a new BIOS and a lot of bug fixes, you get the idea. Other than that, there are a few details worth mentioning but not many.

The ‘big’ bang is the new Zen 5 cores which is assumed because of the Strix Halo heritage. That said it has better AVX-512, faster DDR5, and, umm, oh look over there, is that a bird? Seriously though this new 4005 line also supports the 3D Vcache as you would expect from a Halo variant. Once again AMD makes the idiotic choice of putting the cache on only one of the CCDs because asymmetry is such a bright idea in compute. Hacky software mitigations always lead to good things, right?

AMD Epyc 4005 SKU list

Mercifully short SKU lists are a good thing

So here are the SKUs, a merciful six compared to Intel’s 83 followed by 71 more a quarter later for no real reason. The only thing to notice here is the 8c and 16c models are single CCDs, the cache size confirms it, and the 4585PX has stacked cache on one CCD only. *FACE*PALM*

So how much are they? Damn good question and this is where AMD fails once again. They pre-briefed and talked about price/performance, price/core, and other metrics but didn’t release prices. THIS IS A NOXIOUS PRACTICE AMD, STOP IT, IT MAKES YOU LOOKS IDIOTIC. That said they did give a range of $239-699 for the devices. If ECC actually works, they might be a solid buy but without pricing, we won’t go there.

So in the end, AMD once again snatches defeat from the jaws of victory with messaging. Why? Beats us but someone must be getting bonuses based on negative feedback. Is there anything bad to say about the product? Other than the cache, not really. Is there anything good to say about them? Having never seen or used one or it’s predecessor, not much we can say here either. Once again, more of the same.S|A
