Windows 11 SE Is Still A Thing, But Not For Long

It Looks Like Chromebooks Schooled Microsoft

Windows 11 SE, not to be mistaken for S-mode in normal Windows 11, is actually still around.  The lower cost version of the OS which comes preinstalled on Surface devices and some other lower cost mobile devices, similar to Chromebooks but less attractive.  The OS is designed primarily to run web apps but certain Microsoft Store apps and even Win32 apps can be enabled and installed if you ask Microsoft nicely.  That may have been part of the reason Windows 11 SE couldn’t compete with Chromebooks, as many schools wouldn’t have anyone who knew how to ask Microsoft to enable a new app, even with someone inclined to do so there’s no guarantee Microsoft would honour the request.

As of yet Ars Technica hasn’t heard a response to their inquires about what exactly educational facilities that did adopt Windows 11 SE should do.  It looks like there may be a run on Chromebooks for back to school.  Ironically, it’s Google that usually abandons their products after five years … or less.
